Few Australian labels are as loved, or as copied, as Zimmermann. Founded in Sydney by sisters Nicky and Simone Zimmermann, the label is known around the world for romantic prints, intricate embroidery and dresses made for long summer days.
That popularity has a downside. As more Zimmermann is bought and sold second-hand, more imitations appear. The good news: real Zimmermann gives itself away in the details. Here's what to look for.
1. Start with the fabric
Zimmermann is built on natural fibres: linen, silk, cotton and fine lace. The fabric should feel substantial and considered, never thin, plasticky or overly shiny.
Check the composition label. Most Zimmermann ready-to-wear is made mainly from natural fibres. Some styles do use synthetics, so a polyester label isn't proof of a fake on its own, but a signature linen or silk style that feels cheap and synthetic is worth questioning.
2. Look closely at the embroidery
Embroidery and broderie are hallmarks of the label, and they're hard to fake well. Look at the stitches under good light. Genuine embroidery is neat, dense and even, usually in a matt thread. Glossy, uneven or loose embroidery is a common sign of a copy.
3. Check the construction
Turn the piece inside out. Seams should be straight, even and secure, with neat finishing and no loose threads. Linings should sit smoothly. Buttons, hooks and zips should feel solid, and patterns should line up where panels meet.
Zimmermann's pieces are complex to make, with tiers, ruffles and panelling. Corners cut in construction tend to show quickly.
4. Read the labels
A genuine piece carries a brand label and a care label listing the size, fibre content and care instructions. Look for clean, even printing and correct spelling. Missing labels, or labels that look newer than the garment, are worth a second look.
It also helps to know the season. Zimmermann names its collections and prints. If you can match a piece to a known style from a past season, through the brand's archive images or other trusted resellers, that's a good sign.
5. Be wary of the price
Zimmermann holds its value well. A brand-new-looking dress listed far below what similar pieces sell for pre-loved is a red flag. So are vague listings, stock photos only, and sellers who won't share photos of the labels.
6. Buy from someone who checks
The simplest way to avoid a fake is to buy from a reseller who inspects every piece before it's listed, and who tells you exactly what condition it's in.
At The Harmonic, every piece is inspected by our team before it's listed. We check it for any faults or damage, we only accept pieces of the highest quality, and every item is cleaned. If there are any marks, they're clearly shown in the photos or noted in the listing. Our luxury pieces go a step further: each is authenticated through Real Authentication, an independent authentication service, and comes with a Certificate of Authenticity.
Every piece we list is photographed in our studio, with its size, fibre content and condition shown in full. You can read more about how we check and grade every piece.
